What is Melasma, Not Just a Blemish?

Melasma cannot be viewed as merely an excessive production and deposition of melanin pigment in the skin.

In the deep dermal layer of the skin, pigment-forming cells called melanocytes become excessively activated.

The melanin pigment produced by these cells tends to repeatedly spread over a wide area.

This ultimately reaches the dermal layer, taking the form of a complex pigmentary disorder that persists for a long time.
